The Fjord Protection Project

The Oslofjord is in crisis and needs urgent emergency assistance.

To save the fjord, emissions must be drastically reduced, and work on restoring biodiversity must begin immediately.

The fjord protection project has developed the first biohabitat moorings – artificial reefs and anchoring systems that facilitate new growth of seaweed and kelp. These act as carriers for mussel chains that are suspended in the sea via buoys. Together, they contribute to the natural purification of the water, and provide safe breeding grounds for small fish and other life in the fjord.

The work is led by Rune "Supern" Olsgaard, and is carried out partly on a voluntary basis by volunteers of all ages – from children and young people to grandparents. The involvement of the local community is a central part of our method.
We have built an effective and flexible toolbox for this work:

  • The crane and diving boat Normann (49 feet) with hydraulic winches
  • Hard RIB (25 feet) with crane and motorized winch
  • Aluminum barges for shipping and nearshore operations
  • And our trusty fire truck from 1974 that provides logistics on land

We are looking for partners The fjord protection project is a collaboration between Englehjelpen, local coastal groups, volunteers and professionals. Now we want to strengthen this work further – in the face of both climate challenges and the need for knowledge sharing.

That is why we are participating in Arendalsuka 2025 to forge new ties with players in:

  • Environmental research and marine technology
  • Educational institutions and youth organizations
  • Foundations, companies and public supporters
